PARKING METER KEYS

DUNCAN, MILLER, POM, PARK-O-METER, ROCKWELL, DUAL, RHODES, MARK TIME, KARPARK, MAGEE-HALE AND OTHERS

I think I spend half of every day talking to people about parking meter keys and locks! I am a licensed locksmith and specialize in vintage parking meter locks. You will find additional information listed by manufacturer and model throughout this page. I hope this information will add some clarity on the subject and also help you identify your vintage parking meter.

  1. While I offer master keys for some vintage parking meter service locks, master keys for the vault locks do not exist! Each city had their own key that was coded for just their meter vault locks.
  2. If you are looking for a vault key, you have a number of options.
    • (a) In our shop I can pick, decode and make a key in many but NOT all cases.
    • (b) You can drill and replace the lock.... Don't drill until you know that your replacement lock is available and at a price that you can live with. Some locks are fairly expensive! I do stock many original and aftermarket replacement locks with keys if you do deside to drill your old locks. Again, check before you drill!
    • (c) If the vault door is open, you can send me just the lock after making sure it is a lock I work on.
    • (d) You can ask the city the meter came from for the key or the key code stamped on the key, however this is a longshot as most cities will not release or don't know this information.
    • (e) In a few cases, the code is stamped on the lock. if this is the case, a key can be made from that code. Normally the city did not want this code stamped on the lock but on the key only.
    • (f) I'm sure you have more options, they just don't come to mind but may show up later through out this page.
  3. I'm often asked "Why did they make it so hard to get into an old parking meter?" Please think about it for 10 seconds before asking this question..... Making it easy to get into parking meters was not the city or manufacturers objective.... just the opposite.

Find the letters stamped on your service lock cylinders and match them up with the correct key listed below. These keys might fit any of the above named parking meter manufacturers.

All of the service locks in this series of meters was a wafer style lock. You will need to turn the key counterclockwise a number of times in order to unscrew the lock cylinder from the threaded post. Again, you will need to match the code that is stamped on your lock cylinder with the correct key, below.

NOTE: The keys below will not open the vault door!

KXA stamped lock cylinder

Note: this key requires a fair amount of "handwork" and time to make on this hard to find blank. The picture below shows what a KXA cylinder looks like. If you have this cylinder, you need a KXA7 key.

NOTE: A POM 7 key will open the service lock on 99% of the old POM meters from 1947-1960. It will open about 80% of the meters made after 1960 if it has the "W" shaped key slot and is stamped POM or is blank.

MBM or MCM Lock Cylinder

Note: if your lock cylinder is stamped MBM, you need a MBM 7 key. If it is stamped with MCM, you need a MCM 7 key.

Vault Keys for Magee-Hale, Park-O-Meter, Dual, Rockwell and POM Inc. Parking Meters.

These companies all used more than one brand of vault locks, but the ACE 7 pin was one of the most popular.

  1. Some of the Ace 7 pin locks had a code stamped on them. This code may be stamped in one of two places (see pictures below). If your lock is stamped with an "EX" or "MM" number, I can sometimes make a key from that information, if that code is no longer in service. Another option, with writen permission from the city that the meters came from, I can make a key.
  2. I have had good luck picking and decoding the ACE 7 pin vault lock on this series of meters as long as the lock is not damaged. This service requires the meter be in our Lincoln, Nebraska shop.
  3. I stock replacement locks with key for many of the meters in this series. You can drill (if locked closed) and replace the vault door lock and key. Please check to make sure your replacement lock is available before drilling! I stock both a new, original ACE lock and key or an aftermarket ACE with 2 keys (see below).
